Ahead of the second leg, the Women's National Super League (NSL) is taking shape. The battle for supremacy continues as most teams eye promotion for playing in the Kenya Women's Premier League (KWPL) next season. Some teams are putting in a determined performance to avoid the relegation axe.
Kayole Starlets sits on the top of the table, four points above Gaspo Women. After losing the promotion play-off to the KISPED Queens last season, Kayole Starlets are determined to earn direct promotion this season.
Mary Adhiambo, Kayole Starlets head coach is aiming to guide her side to the KWPL “We did our best to get promotion last season but we didn’t manage and we are doing everything to achieve that feat. We are working on correcting our mistakes and putting in the hard work.”
With 10 matches played, they have 7 wins, 2 draws and 1 loss. Their only defeat came against their arch-rival, Mathare United Women. Having conceded 4 goals, they have the best defensive record in the league.
Due to financial constraints, Gaspo Women were relegated from KWPL last season after dishing three walkovers. The Gatundu-based side seems to be a force to reckon with in the WNSL this season, only four points separate them from the league leaders. With 21 points on their name, they have registered 4 wins, 4 draws and 1 loss.
Mathare United Women Fc under the stewardship of Anne Aluoch is also a team to watch. The results put them third on the log, 5 points behind the Kayole Starlets who top the league. By finishing third last season, they fell short of Kayole Starlets and Mombasa Olympics, failing to get a chance to play in the promotion playoffs.
Bandari Queens who had an impressive season starts have failed to replicate the same results in each game week. They have 5 wins, 2 draws and 3 losses, with that result the team sits fourth on the log with 17 points.
Sunderland Samba FC is the highest-scoring side in the league as they have scored 21 goals. Faith Mboya, their net buster, leads the top scorer chart in the zone with 13 goals with only one of her goals coming from penalty kicks.
Uweza Women and MacMillan Queens sit in the relegation zone with 5 points and 1 point respectively. MacMillan Queens are yet to register a league win this season. They have scored only 2 goals as they have conceded 23 goals on the run. Uweza Women has the worst defensive record in the league as they have let in the most goals, 23.
Competition in this zone appears to be so intense as only three points separate the league leaders fifth-placed team. Military Side Vicker Queens from Lanet Barracks, sits on the top of the table with 21 points. The league newbies have registered 6 wins, 3 draws and 1 loss. Having conceded 6 goals, the military side has one of the best defensive records in the league.
Soccer Assassins (Madira Girls) comes second with one point behind the league leaders. After failing to cope with the heat in top tier league KWPL, the league newbies by then were relegated to the WNSL. This season, again, they aim to return to the top-tier women's league. Harambee Starlets U17 wonderkid Valery Nekesa has been their instrumental player this season. She aims to propel the team again to the KWPL.
Kakamega Starlets had a good outing with the transfer market. After earning a promotion to play in WNSL from the regional league, they robbed Wadadia of their four key players. Adding some experienced players on their side was a boost in their chase for a KWPL spot. They sit third in the table, tied on points 21, with Soccer Assassin but with an inferior goal difference.
Gideon Starlets sits fourth in the table with 19 points with 6 wins, 1 draw and 3 losses. Last season, Gideon Starlets came close to playing in promotion play off but they lost the spot to KISPED Queens.
Due to financial constraints and leadership wrangles, Trans Nzoia Falcons were relegated from KWPL last season after failing to honour 3 fixtures. This season, the rejuvenated side seems to be up to the task. They have 5 wins, 3 draws and 2 losses, the results put them fifth on the log, 3 points behind the league leaders.
Kisii Queens had an impressive season start but they have slowed on the way. They are 7th on the log, with 12 points.
Eldoret Falcons and Chakol Queens are deep-rooted in the relegation zone with 4 and 3 points respectively. Chakol Queens are winless this season, with only 3 draws and 7 losses. Having conceded 23 goals, the Eldoret Falcons have one of the worst defensive records in the league.
