Mathare United and Mara Sugar continued their winning ways after defeating Darajani Gogo 3-0 and Kibera Black Stars 1-0, respectively, in a National Super League doubleheader held at Dandora Stadium.
The Slum Boys were eager to confirm their promotion back to the FKF Premier League and they drew first blood in the 15th minute when a miscommunication occurred in Gogo’s defensive line. Dan Odhiambo, a quick and brilliant-minded winger, seized the opportunity, delivering a beautiful pass to Meshack Ochieno, who opened the scoring for the hosts.
After the break, the visitors tweaked their setup, bringing on two wingers, and immediately turned the tie in their favor. They controlled possession and piled more pressure on Mathare, who were restricted to counterattacks. However, this dominance was short-lived, as Mathare regained control of the match, extending their lead in the 81st minute against the run of play. Gogo were attacking Mathare through a corner kick, however Mathare were able to clear counter attacking through Kibet, who was tripped by Gogo's goalkeeper resulting in a penalty that Steve Kimari calmly converted.
Two goals down and with nothing to lose, the visitors threw more men forward in an attempt to chase the match. However, the Slum Boys were not finished. Christian Lubulu and Fidel Otieno combined brilliantly, with the latter getting on the end of the former's loop to deliver the final blow to Gogo’s hopes.
In the second match, the hosts, Kibera Black Stars, came out firing quickly, taking the game to the league leaders, Mara Sugar, and sustaining enough pressure. Mara Sugar, however, kept their composure and maintained defensive discipline, thwarting their opponents' threats. One could say they were like robots, following instructions meticulously, as they held their lines in a tight formation.
Just like serial winners, the millers would break the deadlock in the 38th minute. Brian Ochieng was the quickest to react in Kibera Black Stars aliased Yamana, Gogo’s mother, area. The winger collected a loose ball to fire past Yamana’s goalkeeper. Almost immediately the hosts had a chance to equalize after Bolo was through on goal. One on one chance with Felix, the Millers goalkeeper, the forward failed to convert Yamana’s final chance of the half.
Upon returning for the second half, Yamama continued to ramp up the pressure, increasing the match's tempo significantly. Attacks were launched at the Millers' goal post from both wings. Rich Donald Bolo, with fans chanting his name from all sides of the stadium, appeared to be the standout player for Yamama, winning a penalty opportunity to equalize the match. Captain Omwando stepped up to take the penalty, but his shot missed wide, leaving the crowd in stunned silence as the Millers celebrated the miss.
Seizing the momentum, Mara Sugar brought in additional defensive midfielders to protect their lead. The match grew increasingly emotional, with tackles and fouls occurring all over the pitch. Isogol Matthias of the Millers became a formidable presence, making life difficult for his opponents. Despite the relentless efforts of the Black Stars, Mara Sugar's defense remained unyielding. The final whistle blew, sealing a 0-1 victory for Mara Sugar, who bagged the three away points and solidified their dominance at the top of the table.
