Kakamega Homeboyz and Mathare United played out a goalless draw in a hard-fought encounter at Mumias Complex. Despite numerous chances and a dominant display from the hosts in the second half, both teams failed to break the deadlock, leaving the match with a share of the spoils.

First Half: A Tight Contest

Mathare United settled into the game quickly, displaying sharp passing in the opening 10 minutes. Despite their early control of possession, Kakamega Homeboyz managed to launch twin attacks through Brian Wekesa and Hillary Otieno, but Mathare's defence, led by Mukok, stood firm.

The second quarter of the first half saw both teams playing a more balanced game, with much of the action happening in midfield. Kakamega Homeboyz had a golden opportunity in the 25th minute when Otieno latched onto a pass from Mudavadi, but Mathare’s goalkeeper Wanyika produced a crucial save. Pius Mwangi then came close to breaking the deadlock, but his effort was deflected just wide after beating a Mathare defender.

Mathare’s best chance of the first half came in the 40th minute when Kevin Kimani’s well-placed delivery found Mukok, but his header missed the target by inches. By halftime, Kakamega Homeboyz had five attempts on goal, while Mathare United managed three, with only one on target.

Second Half: Homeboyz Dominate but Fail to Score

The second half saw Kakamega Homeboyz take control of the game, piling pressure on Mathare’s defence. Hillary Otieno had a perfect opportunity to break the deadlock in the 50th minute but blasted his effort over the crossbar from a promising position.

Mathare made a double substitution in the 55th minute, bringing on Fidel Otieno and Dan Odiambo to bolster their defence, but they continued to struggle as Kakamega Homeboyz pressed for a goal. In the 56th minute, Hillary Otieno’s shot hit the post, and Ambrose Sifuna’s rebound effort crashed against the crossbar in a double miss that summed up Homeboyz's frustrating day.

More substitutions followed as both teams looked for a breakthrough. Kakamega Homeboyz brought on Shumah and Majak, while Mathare introduced Derrick Anami and Elias Kibet. In the 70th minute, Majak received a good free-kick delivery from Omengo, but his effort was blocked by Mathare’s Mulu.

Despite Kakamega Homeboyz dominating the second half, they couldn’t convert their chances. In the 75th minute, Shumah’s header from Buba’s long ball rolled just inches wide, and Potiphar’s header from a corner kick in the 79th minute also missed the target.

Final Whistle: No Goals Despite Homeboyz’s Efforts

The match ended with Kakamega Homeboyz having seven attempts on goal in the second half, three of which were on target. Mathare United failed to create any chances in the second half and had no attempts on goal in this period.

Kakamega Homeboyz completed 213 of their 238 passes, while Mathare United completed 218 out of 268 passes in a game that was evenly matched in terms of possession, but where Homeboyz clearly had the better opportunities.

Both teams are still searching for their first win of the season after two games. The draw leaves Kakamega Homeboyz in 13th place and Mathare United in 14th, each with one point. Both sides will need to address their finishing and creativity in upcoming matches.
