Author: Catherine MwathiFri Sep 20 2024

Kenyan football has seen considerable transformation in the last decade. Since 2014, clubs across the nation have undergone a notable evolution, characterized by advancements both on the field and in management, as well as the emergence of fresh talent.

In 2014, Kenyan football featured a blend of established success and new obstacles. Gor Mahia were the reigning champions and 13-time winners, AFC Leopards, had just come second. These two clubs and others have moved in different directions since then. By 2024, the football landscape has undergone notable changes.

Growth in Club Management, Governance and Finances

A prominent change in Kenyan football clubs has been in the management and governance of clubs.

“The shift towards more professional management structures has been a game-changer. Clubs are now focusing on long-term strategies rather than short-term fixes,” says Michael Owino- football analyst and commentator.

Through the implementation of contemporary management approaches, Tusker FC and KCB FC have fortified their financial stability and strategic planning. These enhancements have facilitated investments in player development and administrative refinement, thereby elevating their competitive standing.

Since 2014, Kenyan football clubs have increased the number of sponsorship deals and commercial partnerships from major brands and businesses, providing them with the financial resources needed to improve training techniques and attract quality players.

For instance, online gaming firm SportPesa unveiled a 75,000,000 million partnership deal on at the start of this season to take over as the main sponsor of Football Kenya Federation Premier League side Shabana FC.

Last year, Azam TV, a Tanzanian pay-tv network, secured a seven-year broadcast rights deal with the Football Kenya Federation (FKF) for the FKF Premier League, valued at $9.1 million (Ksh1.3 billion). The initial fee for the exclusive broadcast rights amounted to $1 million (Ksh145 million), with an annual increase of $100,000 (Ksh14.5 million) for subsequent seasons.

We thank Azam Media for agreeing to partner with us. This partnership will go a long way in improving the league’s visibility and in the long run, making our league even more competitive, said FKF President Nick Mwendwa.

Digital Media and Tech in Sports

Over the last decade, Kenyan football clubs have transformed their operations by integrating digital media and analytics into their systems. Platforms like Ticket Sasa have come in and worked intermittently with KPL clubs. AFC Leopards' online ticketing system have redefined how fans interact with their favorite clubs, providing convenience and increasing accessibility.

Social media, has also played its part offering another avenue for rich interactions. Murang’a Seal grabbed attention last season with witty banter on X. Bandari FC has also been a standout on how it interacts with football fans online.

“Digital media has revolutionized fan engagement. Clubs now have the tools to connect with fans in real-time, building stronger relationships and enhancing their brand presence.” says Sarah Njeri, a digital marketing expert for Tusker FC.

All in all, fans today get to interact more with their teams than before.

Additionally, the arrival of data analysis by Tisini Tech Company has marked a new era for Kenyan football, enhancing both player performance and fan engagement. As more clubs embrace these innovations, the future of Kenyan football looks increasingly digital and data-driven.

Clubs like Kariobangi Sharks and others have partnered with Tisini Tech Company to analyze player performance, match statistics, and even fan preferences. This has not only improved performance on the field but also enhanced fan engagement through personalized content and targeted digital campaigns.

Tech has grown in sports in other ways. One of the reason, betting companies have been sponsorship partners of football in Kenya, is the growth of sports betting in Kenya.

In the last decade, the sports betting industry has seen significant growth. The country today has 119 licensed operators, a number of which, have come in to support the local football teams.

A recent newcomer is Tano Bora, which allows for in game live predictions. Tano Bora, a football-focused platform developed by Tisini Tech, has enhanced its user experience by incorporating features that foster greater fan engagement. By combining football discussions with betting odds and forecasts, the platform is a choice for fans seeking a more interactive betting experience.

Youth Development and Talent Nurturing

In recent years, Kenyan football Clubs have established youth academies and development programs aimed at nurturing young talent. Teams like Gor Mahia and AFC Leopards have made strides in this area, creating pathways for young players to rise through the ranks.

According to James Mwangi, a youth coach at Epitome school of chess, “Investing in youth is crucial for the future of Kenyan football. Our academies are producing talented players who are now making an impact in the top leagues.”

Challenges and Way Forward

Despite significant strides by Kenyan football clubs in the last ten years, they still continue to face various obstacles such as unstable funding, administrative disputes, and governance issues have at times hindered the sport's growth. However, the determination of the clubs and their stakeholders has been remarkable.

Former footballer and Coach Julius Owino puts it, “The path hasn’t been smooth, but the clubs’ resilience and love for the game have helped them push through these difficulties and keep pursuing success.”

The progress of Kenyan football clubs over the past ten years has established a solid base for further growth and success. Prioritizing professionalism, financial stability, youth development, data, and fan involvement places Kenyan football in a strong position. With dedication and innovation, the coming years hold the potential for even more remarkable achievements and milestones in Kenyan football.
