Nairobi United FC are through to the Mozzart Bet Cup final after a dramatic 1-1 draw and a clinical 3-1 penalty shootout victory over Mara Sugar at Dandora Stadium. The NSL side, already promoted to the FKF Kenyan Premier League, showcased class, composure, and tactical maturity to outwit their top-tier opponents and book a date with giants Gor Mahia in the final.
From the first whistle, Nairobi United dominated proceedings, controlling 81% of first-half possession and forcing Mara Sugar to defend deep. Despite creating numerous chances and winning a flurry of corners, the breakthrough remained elusive in the opening 45 minutes.
Head coach Nicolas Muyoti responded with a tactical masterstroke in the second half, bringing on Michael Karamor for Michael Jairo and shifting from a 4-2-3-1 to a more aggressive 4-4-2 formation. The introduction of Karamor alongside Frankie Ouya upfront injected urgency and unpredictability into Nairobi United’s attack, instantly unsettling the Mara Sugar defence. In contrast, Mara Sugar head coach Edward Manoah appeared short of answers, unable to adjust his team’s structure or stem the growing pressure. As Nairobi turned the screw, Manoah’s side looked increasingly stretched and reactive.
In the 54th minute, the change paid off. Isaac Omweri, who had been exceptional throughout, delivered a wicked in-swinging corner that Karamor nodded home to give Nairobi United a deserved lead.
But Mara Sugar hit back almost immediately. Lameck Omondi produced a thunderbolt from outside the area to level the scores spectacularly, keeping the tie alive in the 58th minute. However, the goal didn't mask the pressure Mara was under.
They struggled to cope with the fluid frontline of Omweri, Frankie Ouya, and Duncan Omalla, whose constant rotations and movements disoriented the defenders. Omweri, in particular, was outstanding in creative, defensive, and transitional play, driving the team forward with flair and intent.
Despite their dominance, Nairobi United couldn't find a winner in normal time. The match went to penalties, and that's when Ernest Muhammed took over.
The goalkeeper delivered a man-of-the-match performance, saving three Mara Sugar spot-kicks and sealing a 3-1 win in the shootout. Muhammed denied Eric Juma, Henry Thomas, and Robert Obaga, while only Fredrick Ngiela managed to convert for Mara.
For Nairobi United, the goals came from John Otieno, Brian Ogutu, and Rodgers Oporia, with Gideon Otieno being the only one to miss a goal.
It's the third time the city team has progressed via penalties, having bested KPL teams KCB and Tusker FC. The team has now taken out four KPL sides with Kakamega Homeboyz the other side to fall.

MOTM: Ernest Muhammad of Nairobi United

They now advance to the Mozzart Bet Cup final, where they will face reigning KPL champions Gor Mahia, who edged Murang'a Seal in the other semi-final last week. With Gor struggling to defend their league title, this final could be their only realistic shot at silverware this season, setting up a blockbuster clash for the crown.
For Nairobi United, the final represents more than just a trophy chase. Already promoted to the KPL, they face one of the country's most decorated clubs in what promises to be a David vs Goliath showdown. One side is seeking redemption, while the other aims to announce its arrival in top-flight fashion with a historic statement.
It will also be a contest between two brothers as Benson Omalla of Gor faces Duncan Omalla of Nairobi.
