A doubleheader of action lit up the RFUEA grounds, a historic rugby venue, on the first weekend of the Kenya Cup 2024/2025 resumption. But what a Kenyan rugby showcase it was, from the sheer dominance of KCB to the pulsating Ngong Road Derby between Kenya Harlequins and Impala.

KCB Flex Their Muscles Against Mwamba

A one-sided affair was what this game played out as KCB squared off against Mwamba. From whistle to whistle, KCB were on top, exploiting their defence at Mwamba and playing with all the precision to score their chances. An 84-22 gulf in experience and execution saw the two sides settle on the final score.

KCB's emphatic win also handed them the highest margin of the opening weekend and propelled them to the top of the Kenya Cup table. Their fast and powerful ball movement and defence mind showed that they were clear on how they wanted the season to unfold. With this performance, they sent a resounding message to the league: KCB means business.

Ngong Road Derby - Kenya Harlequins vs Impala

The big ticket of the day was the Ngong Road derby between Kenya Harlequins and Impala. This was a clash, steeped in history, steeped in rivalry, to live up to billing, an action-packed rollercoaster of emotions.

A high bar was set for Impala, the Floodlit Tournament finalist and first runners-up. But the Quins had their ideas; they would fight to the death for their turf, and kudos to them. It was a touchline contest, tempers well flared, discipline thrown out of the window.

Cards Galore

The cards were flying everywhere after that much emotional tension in the middle of the pitch. Indiscipline and high stakes ran in the blood of both teams, as they received two yellow cards each. But the situation worsened for the Quins when Charlton Mokua was shown a red card, and they were down one man for the better part of the game, which Impala could have capitalized on, awaiting further disciplinary verdicts for the red card awarded is the Quins lethal back row. Even though Impala were so aggressive, they avoided red cards.

Quins were playing with twelve men for more than ten minutes of the game as the yellow cards were given out simultaneously, a situation that Impala could have easily used to win the game. But they exhibited unbelievable resilience and tactical thinking, which helped them through the storm.

Turning Points

Impala then stretched Quins for the opening ten minutes of the second half after quick passes and bruising runs blunted the hosts' resolve at the back. However, Quins' strategic changes and strong tackling neutralized them. Quins turned the tide and won back control of the game, with their defensive line starting to hold firm.

Quins, though outmanned a few times, didn’t buckle under pressure, using mistakes from Impala to open up a lead. Defining a feature of their performance was the ability to adapt and overcome adversity.

Fullback Leon Nyang of Quins was the standout player of the match. The two tries he scored were a masterclass for finishing, and his share of two more tries demonstrated his vision and playmaking capabilities. Nyang added to his status as the day's MVP by kicking his side to an impressive 48-12 win against their archrivals.

Implications for the Season

Doubleheader results have big knock-on effects on Kenya Cup standings. It shows in KCB’s commanding victory and Mwamba’s struggles to overturn the relegation.

The derby win is a morale boost for Quins, who are staking a claim to being one of the league’s frontrunners. However, the weakness that was unveiled in their performance in the Challenger will need to be observed in the way Impala regroups and addresses the areas. What are we to make of their inability to impose discipline and realize numerical advantages?
